About My Film Making

Most of us are probably guilty of having a few dreams and I claim no exception! From an early age I was always playing around with cameras and camcorder. There were a few hit and miss projects over the years but the first chance I got to produce anything of decent quality was “Intermission”.

Intermission started as a purely technical experiment on broadcasting sound over the internet using the Real Audio system whilst at Oxford University. I'd seen a few sites using it and fancied giving it try. Soon afterwards I got together with James Golding and eventually a whole crew who would produce prerecorded and live content to distibute over the net to whoever wanted to listen. Though we never “went platinum” we were impressed by how many people were listening!

After a few broadcasts we took the natural progression of broadcasting (streaming) video over the internet. This took the challenge to another level, and using an old camcorder and basic graphic editing capabilities (in those days a humble students computer certainly couldnt edit let alone compress in real time high resolution video). We produced short clips of comedy sketches, short films (which mainly seemed to end up as comedy!) and even a music video.

You're more than welcome to read more about Intermission here [link pending]. As our material was all hosted on our own servers (personal computers) whilst at University, it all disappeared when we left, as we'd never attempted to make an official society of our work (and with my other projects let alone work that was one less I could live without). Unfortunately all the material is available only in few low quality format, which was fine for broadcasting over the internet in those days, but seems very sorry now. However the seeds were sown, and having been able to shoot, direct, and edit material I'd truly found a marvellous joy.

It would be harsh to say that “nothing” came of all our effort. Yes our team came and went, yes we had a few contacts and interested parties (including Cream wanting us to broadcast from their club and a director from the BBC, who spoke to us whilst visiting our college, also expressed interest) but at the end of the day the work was laid to rest.

A few years later, and only relatively late, in 2002, that I bought myself a Sony PCR-120 digital camcorder.

At first I simply recorded meetings of friends, and peformed some test editing but it wasnt long till enough people were gathered together that we could embark on making a mini film. These would be distributed electronically or over VHS copies.

Now I've been able to take distribution to the next stage and produce DVD's complete with menus and high quality (relatively speaking!) video.

It's been a while since I last produced anything new, but the mind is never idle and when I see a chance and get the right people together again I hope to insult a hundred years of film making with another of my efforts!
