About the Yearbook

Many a foolish quest was started by a chat over a pint, and my embarking on putting together the first St. Hugh's Yearbook (in 'living memory', if not at all) all started after a few drinks celebrating another successful episode of Intermission (but that's another story, and in time page on this site, link pending).   After being disappointed by no Yearbook having been produced for my own year at the appropriate time, I had launched into rant to Rachel (pictured above at the end of the story) as to exactly how easy it would be to make a Yearbook when she'd no doubt had enough and lifted me to accept my challenge.

10
minutes earlier, I had been recounting how fortunate I was to have a Yearbook produced for me at my School (by Stuart Pink & Chris Philp) and that production was often the source of amusement (and admittedly embarrassment) whenever it was produced to show people 'tween and at university.  Somewhere in my mind I'd always hoped to have one from university & this I wasn't alone in, as I was to discover that other Old Olavians (link pending) of my class had gone on to do the same (Sam Tomlinson at Hertford for one).

The edited highlights of the story go something like this:

As suspected nothing had been done on the Class of 1995 Yearbook yet so I pooled together Class of 1995 rep Anna Wright, Rachel Blackie & myself and went about photographing the entire remnants of the Class of 1994 (recall that many students were on 4 year courses) and the entire Class of 1995.  Our intention now was to produce a joint Yearbook for the Classes of 1994 & 1995.

With the aid of James Golding's camcorder Rachel & I caught motion footage of everyone by
a) inviting people to come to my room (~30% success)
b) knocking on people's doors (~95% photo'd now)
c) catching them unawares in the computer rooms (thank you David Thorn for "users |grep shug00xx")
d) chasing them through bars (link pending) & generally being a pain
e) & in one instance getting their friends to submit a photo because one person went so such length to avoid us that... they almost managed.

From the motion footage we took the best still we could manage.  It is mainly this procedure which resulted in the grainy photos found in the Yearbook.  There was the option to have taken still pictures with a good SLR of everyone, but that required the time and money which we didn't have.  By using the camcorder, we were able to obtain a printout with photos of 99% of the required people extremely quickly.

Putting that printout in the lodge was, I think, instrumental in showing everyone that there was a serious team organising a Yearbook & it inspired the collective students to submit their own or friends entries to be entered into the Yearbook.

The rest, as all things Oxford must no doubt be, was academic.   There was a lot of effort put into collecting material & putting together the Yearbook on a DTP package.  There was plenty of begging of the College to cover us incase the year book didn't break even (which it came very close to doing) & there was plenty of screaming at our printers - but all that you've no doubt heard before.

At the end of the day we produced a Yearbook which was a first at St. Hugh's in my 'living memory' and which I hope is a peculiar, emotion & memory prompting piece of waste paper which people will treasure.

On a personal level, not only did I get to meet everyone in the year below my own (and I say that with rosy cheeks) but I helped to start what should be a tradition in every close knit community, but should certainly have been going at St. Hughs!  I know that the year following my departure from Oxford another Yearbook was in the making, with any luck that has continued.
